Professor Emma Kendrick, CChem FRSC FIMMM, is Professor of Energy Materials in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham, where she co-leads the Energy Materials Group. Her research spans the design, manufacture, and recycling of sustainable battery technologies, with expertise from fundamental materials science through to industrial cell development. She has developed methods for multi-scale parameterisation of battery chemistries, leading to the spin-out company About:Energy in 2021, where she now serves as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board.
Prior to academia, she held senior industrial positions, including Chief Technologist for Energy Storage at SHARP Laboratories of Europe and Lead Scientist at two lithium-ion battery SMEs. She has been widely recognised for her contributions, including the 2024 RSC Horizon Prize (ReLiB team) for advances in battery recycling, the 2021 RSC Mid-Career Award (Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division), and the 2019 Hothersall Memorial Award. Prof. Kendrick holds a BSc in Chemistry (Manchester), an MSc in New Materials (Aberdeen), and a PhD from Keele University via a postgraduate transfer partnership with CERAM Research.
