One of the highlights of the Faraday Institution Conference 2025 was the poster sessions. We are delighted to share the winners of the poster prizes.

The judges noted a huge variety of research across the value chain, not only demonstrating research excellence but delivering value and impact to the wider research community and in many cases potential impact to industry. It is clear that some of the people presenting posters this week, are the research leaders of the future.

The winners are:

Prize for Scientific Content: Zoe Wright, University of Oxford and ISIS, NEXGENNA

Developing and Characterising High Power Layered Transition Metal Oxide Cathode Materials for Sodium-ion Batteries

Zoe is investigating improvements in sodium-ion cathode materials by doping with calcium. She’s using an innovative technique – muon spin relaxation spectroscopy -that provides a reliable method to determine activation energies and diffusion rates, which is a good indicator of the rate performance of materials.

Prize for Industrial Context Rajasekar Krishnamoorthy, University of Sheffield, Nextrode

Mixing and Flow Optimization of the Dry Mix for the Dry Battery Electrode Manufacturing

Raja has used surface coatings of active materials to enable dry mixing. This technique improves the flow behaviour of the mixed powder to allow for a more homogenous electrode and faster coating, which has clear industrial relevance.

Prize for Research Progress & Findings, Isabel Antony, UCL, Degradation Project

“Neutron Imaging to Study Electrolyte Dynamics in Lithium-Ion Batteries” 

This poster outlines is a new approach to silicon production for use in high energy anode materials. It demonstrates clear comparisons to existing commercial materials and includes a strategy for commercialisation and scale up.

Prize for Communication and Audience Engagement, Jan-Philipp Hoffknecht, Helmholtz Institute

“Multimodal Operando Methods Granting Insights into Degradation of Solid-State Sodium-Sulfur Batteries” 

Jan-Philipp has developed a new cell design for the operando study of solid-state batteries enabling real-time insights of degradation mechanisms in sodium sulfur cells. He presented his poster in a very enthusiastic, friendly and engaging manner. His eye catching and well-presented poster was supplemented by a flip book of the propagation and healing of cracks, which was highly engaging.
