Call for Research Proposals: Battery Data and AI

The Battery Data and AI funding call aims to improve the consistency of battery data and metadata across the Faraday Institution’s research programmes, helping to establish a platform that can support AI-driven approaches to battery science and innovation.
Projects will build on existing work while laying the foundations for improved data capture, standardised cell assembly practices and consistent metadata. This foundational activity is expected to inform future guidance for Faraday Institution projects and promote alignment with international data standards and initiatives where appropriate.
Potential areas of focus might be:
- Pilot projects on data standardisation (e.g., experimental protocols, metadata frameworks, battery data formats).
- Pilot a standardised data and metadata framework in a small number of current Faraday Institution projects.
- Pilot AI-led battery science-based activities which that encourage the standardisation of data curation.
Funding available: Up to £0.4 million for sprint projects of around £100k and a duration of 6 months, starting 1st October 2026.
How to apply: Applications should be submitted by 12:00pm (noon), on 21st of August 2026 via Flexigrant selecting the “Battery Data and AI call”.
Assessment process: Applications will be reviewed by an independent panel. Using the panel’s recommendations as guidance, the Faraday Institution will select successful applicants in line with the independent review process and by taking a portfolio approach.

Additional information: Total budget available is currently £0.4m at 80% FEC. Applications are expected to be costed appropriately at around £100k, enabling the funding of ~4 projects. To be eligible for funding, individuals and research organisations leading the application must meet UKRI’s eligibility criteria.
